TURKEY, Iznik, 17th century. - Lot 111
TURKEY, Iznik, 17th century. A polychrome ceramic circular dish decorated with a central male figure on a floral design. H. 4,5 cm. Diam. 29 cm. (old restorations and chips notably at the heel). Note : This beautiful dish is decorated with a central male figure on a floral decoration. The rim is decorated with a frieze of leaves and alternating flowers. Painted in black, blue, green and coral on a white background, under a colourless glaze, the decoration was later enhanced with gold leaf, highlighting the details of the figure's clothing and part of the floral decoration. The presence of the human figure and the gold highlights make this a rare example of Ottoman ceramics. A 17th-century dish with floral decoration, also with gold highlights, is in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Inv. No. 52.1.19). Other Iznik dishes, decorated with figures and dated between 1570 and 1620, are published in: Hitzel F. and Jacotin M. (2005), Iznik, l'Aventure d'une Collection, Les céramiques Ottomanes du musée national de la Renaissance - Château d'Écouen, RMN, Paris, pp. 291-299. Expert : Alexis RENARD.
