Spanish-Flemish workshop, 16th century. - Lot 112
Spanish-Flemish workshop, 16th century. Scenes from the Infancy of Christ: the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Circumcision, the Adoration of the Magi. Four panels carved in wood relief in two wooden frames decorated with pilasters, 19th century. Total length : 191 cm. Each panel : 44 x 29 cm. Note : This series of carved scenes in bas-relief in oak represent four moments of the Infancy of Christ. They were to be part of a narrative cycle of the Life and Passion of Christ, to be displayed on an altarpiece. This favorite subject of Christian iconography was widely disseminated by Flemish artists from the 15th century. They responded to a new form of spirituality born in the Netherlands, modern devotion, which encouraged the faithful to a more personal and sensitive practice centered on the more humanized figure of Christ. Diffused by engravings from the end of the 16th century, these scenes, strongly inspired by the daily life of the cities of the Southern Netherlands, were then taken up by foreign artists: the composition in a tight frame, the stylization of the characters, the radiating halos attest to a non-Flemish hand: one recognizes rather the characteristics of the Hispanic style which spread in the following century in the Hispanic colonial Empire. Our set presents a rich and syncretic theme that attests to the numerous contacts and exchanges between Spain and the Southern Netherlands under the Habsburg Empire of Spain in the 16th century.
