Henri-Auguste FOURDINOIS (1830-1907) and probably Victor PAI - Lot 256
Henri-Auguste FOURDINOIS (1830-1907) and probably Victor PAILLARD (1805-1886). Table of middle form moved in blackened wood and marquetry known as Boulle of scale and brass. The tray with mythological decoration featuring Ceres and Neptune in majesty, each sitting under a serlienne with paired uprights of loves in caryatids, the whole surrounded by foliage and flowers. The belt is curved on each side, the whole resting on four arched feet. Rich ornamentation of chiseled and gilded bronzes such as masks of bearded men adorning the center of the belts, female faces adorning the sides, leafy rocaille-style corner falls, sabots and fine underlining moldings. Stamped FOURDINOIS under a crosspiece for Henri-Auguste FOURDINOIS (1830-1907). Napoleon III period, around 1865/1870. 80 x 164 x 94 cm. (excellent condition, covered with a later protective glass top). Note : Born in Paris in 1830, Henri-Auguste FOURDINOIS trained in the workshop of Félix DUBAN (1797-1870) before working in London as a model designer with the goldsmith Jean-Valentin MOREL (1794-1860) and then in Paris with the bronzer Victor PAILLARD (1805-1886). From his time with Félix DUBAN, he retained a great sense of composition, giving a very architectural form to his furniture. In 1867, he succeeded his father who had taught him woodworking and a concern for excellence. An inspired designer, his creations were very well received by the critics of the time, who emphasized the delicacy, the perfection of details and the beauty of the ornaments. During the Second Empire, FOURDINOIS received important orders for the furniture of the Crown: furnishing the apartments of the Pope, those of Empress Eugenie and her Chinese museum at the Château de Fontainebleau. The Ministry of the Navy commissioned him to furnish the imperial yacht. The 1887 sales catalog, at the time of the company's closure, praises an artist "who has participated in many exhibitions, winning high awards everywhere, garnering invaluable acclaim on all sides, furnishing museums, royal residences and aristocratic hotels in Europe and the New World with pure masterpieces. The table we present today faithfully reproduces the technique of Boulle marquetry, sublimating it by its finesse and quality. The high quality bronzes are probably by Victor PAILLARD. This table was certainly the object of an order from the Empress Eugenie of whom FOURDINOIS was the official supplier. Its restoration in 2012 by the cabinetmaker Bernard LEMAIRE was the subject of several press articles praising the exceptional quality of FOURDINOIS's work and thus deserving a place of choice at the Salon du patrimoine at the Carrousel du Louvre which took place from November 8 to 11 of that year.
