Belgium, 1930s. - Lot 44
Belgium, 1930s. Belgian patriotic bracelet, commemorating Germany's invasion of Belgium in 1914 (violation of the 1839 London Treaty concerning Belgium's neutrality). Ornamented with a circular vermeil medal inscribed "Traité de 1839 - Chiffon de Papier" and six vermeil arms representing the various Belgian cantons. The reverse of the medal is engraved with the signatures of the signatories of the 1839 Treaty, including Bulow, Sebastiani and Palmerston. All components bear the boar's head and master goldsmith hallmarks, made in the 1930s. Post-modern black ribbon bracelet. (Worn, nylon strap, good condition). Note: The Treaty of London, known as the "Treaty of XXIV Articles", is a treaty signed between Belgium and the Netherlands on April 19, 1839, recognizing the independence, neutrality and borders of the new state created following the 1830 Revolution. On the same day, the five great powers, including the United Kingdom, France, Austria, Prussia and Russia, which had already recognized Belgium's independence in 1831 while imposing a perpetual and guaranteed neutrality, reiterated their status as guarantor powers.
