France, Revolution - 1st Republic (1789-1804). - Lot 80
France, Revolution - 1st Republic (1789-1804).
Ceremonial or dignitary sword (enigmatic model).
Large cast brass frame, originally silver-plated (remains), the smooth handle decorated on one side with a medallion featuring a trophy of arms flanked by foliage, flags and a flaming torch, pommel in the form of a rounded triangle resting on a crown of stylized foliage, stamped with the profile of Mercury on the right and Dionysus on the left, topped with a threaded brass rivure knob. The right-hand crossbar is decorated with a jellyfish head in the center, with slightly bent quillons ending in a scroll stamped with a leonine mask. The handle is stamped "BROWN". Stained white straight blade, taken from a model 1855 glaive. The scabbard is made of black sheet metal imitating leather, with two brass fittings and two steel rings. (Patina of age, riveting button later, fairly good condition).
60 cm (Blade 41 cm).
Note: Interesting sword, unfortunately composite, partly period (for the mount), certainly reassembled for the theater in the late 19th/early 20th century.
