Note: The 1809 German-Austrian campaign pitted French and allied troops led by Napoleon I against the Austrian army commanded by Archduke Charles. It resulted in a major victory for the French over the Austrians. The battle of Eckmül (Bavaria) on April 22, 1809 was marked by a major cavalry battle fought in the evening towards Eggolfsheim by the Nansouty and Saint-Sulpice divisions. Captain MARBOT, orderly to Marshal LANNES, took part in a cavalry charge by the Saint-Sulpice division. His horse was killed beneath him, but he was rescued in extremis by two cuirassiers from the division.
