Guy de Maupassant, Des Vers. Paris, Charpentier, 1880. In-12, [8]-214-[2]p. First edition, after the announced print run of 10 copies on hollande (and some chine according to Talvart and Place). This is indeed the first edition, put on sale on April 27, 1880. Flaubert died on May 10, 1880, and a second edition, with a preface, was published in June. Binding signed Jadis (on the slipcase), full bottle-green morocco with foliage decoration, ribbed spine, gilt head, covers preserved (without spine), untrimmed, a few freckles, slipcase lined. This is not a mosaic binding, but a decorated binding. The motifs are painted, as if lacquered, with ironwork to delimit each part. An astonishingly fine copy of Maupassant's only collection of poetry, his third book. (Talvart & Place, XIII, 248)
