Handa" coin, known as the Katanga cross, LUBA, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Copper, patina of use. Size: 21 x 21 cm. Provenance: Alfred BAUWENS Collection, Brussels, Belgium. By direct descent to the present owner. Note: According to some researchers, this type of copper cross appeared in the Shaba region as early as the 12th century. Both a "reserve" of raw material and currency, they were distributed well beyond their original area, via commercial circuits. They had a well-defined value: one cross paid for six chickens, ten crosses for a rifle.
