Attributed to Nicolas Guy BRENET (1728-1792). - Lot 25
Attributed to Nicolas Guy BRENET (1728-1792). Lucius Albinus offering his carriage to the vestals during the sack of Rome. Large oil on canvas. 113 x 146 cm. (Re-staining, restorations and soiling). Note: This rarely depicted subject is taken from Livy's History of Rome from its foundation. The episode takes place in 390 BC, when Rome is under attack from the Gauls. As the inhabitants hastily abandon the city, Lucius Albinus flees with his family on a chariot. On the way, he meets the vestals, who are trying to save the sacred objects of the Roman people. Faced with this situation, Albinus asks his wife and children to give up their places to welcome the priestesses of the state and the sacred treasures. Thanks to his selfless act, the vestals and the objects are kept safe. Expert : René MILLET
