OVIDE [André Lambert] - Lot 314
OVIDE [André Lambert] The Metamorphoses Paris, 1930, Editions Devambez, in-4 sheets in folder and slipcase. New version by Gilbert Lély. Illustrated with 16 original etchings and 45 two-tone woodcuts by André Lambert. Edition of 170 copies, this is ONE OF 40 ON IMPERIAL JAPON WITH TWO STATES OF THE EAUX-FORTES. (Second paper) Carteret IV-309 "Edition recherché et cotée". André Lambert (1884-1967), born in Switzerland into a family of architects, quickly turned to a career as a painter. In Paris, he studied under Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts, while cultivating his taste for Greek and Latin literature. In 1919, he founded the art magazine Janus, written entirely in Latin, with the participation of his friend Emile Bernard. From 1920 onwards, he moved to Spain, where he continued his personal work with a style reminiscent of George Barbier. An immensely talented engraver, Parisian publishers called on him to engrave illustrations by Chimot and Gerda Wegener. He produced a superb suite devoted to the seven deadly sins, as well as erotic works under the pseudonym Ansaad de Lytencia.
