Set of miscellaneous handwritten letters dated from 1822 to - Lot 115
Set of miscellaneous handwritten letters dated from 1822 to 1878, one undated and unsigned but probably written under the Ancien Régime, discussing the condition of the watchmaking apprenticeship. The first, undated and unsigned, is from a young apprentice watchmaker about his condition as an apprentice to the trade: "There is one indisputable fact, and that is that the students who have left the watchmaking workshop to date have not continued their apprenticeship, or have gone to Paris to earn 25 and 30 sous a day.... I know that I am hired to stay until 22 sous at the watchmaking workshop, but I am hired on condition that I learn until 22 sous ... if I have reached the maximum of what is shown in this workshop, I ask to leave to continue learning in a more advanced workshop, and if I have to earn 25 sous for a year, it is better to start at 21 than 22 ..." probably written during the Ancien Régime, given the style of the writing. The fourth dated 22 Jan (January) 1831 "Sir, I can't help complaining to you that a pocket chronometer No. 13" that I took yesterday from your home, where I had worn it while repeatedly pointing out to your employees the faults that I had recognized in its stopping ... please receive, sir, the expression of my perfect consideration" signed Le Cpt de Veau (vaisseau) Villaret des Joyeux. The sixth, dated 1878, "Cher Monsieur, je vous remercie beaucoup de votre lettre ..." addressed from London to "Monsieur Breguet quai de l'horloge Paris", is inscribed in pencil "Wedermann". The seventh, dated 1844, "Princess Natalie Galitzin requests Monsieur Breguet et Fils to make the necessary repairs to her little watch ... and when it is ready ... to give it to Monsieur le Prince Kourakine ..." signed and inscribed in pencil "Princess Galitzin". The eighth, dated August 1827, "Monsieur, je vous prie de m'envoyer dans le courant de à midi au plus tard une chaîne de montre ..." signed and inscribed in pencil "Anselme de Rothschild". The ninth is dated March 3, 1875, with EB letterhead: "I thank you for your kind invitation on behalf of myself and my son", illegible signature. Two letters are enclosed, one headed "Chemin de fer de Paris à Saint Germain" signed "Emile Pereire" and the other signed "Comte Schoenburn".
