Explanatory note entitled "Montres à une aiguille dites sous - Lot 130
Explanatory note entitled "Montres à une aiguille dites souscriptions" dated June 21, 1821 in Paris, signed L Breguet, sold to Monsieur De Demidoff no. 3624 souscription d'argent guilloché.
"Watches intended for astronomy and the navy have nowadays acquired a very high degree of perfection. The same is true of those made for civilian use. We have few good works of this kind, and their price is beyond the reach of most consumers. I thought that the public would welcome watches perfect enough to take first place after the machines used for Astronomy and the Navy, when they can have them at a moderate price. Such are the watches I propose, repeated experiments have assured me that they are preferable to the best I have made to date for ordinary use ... they are distinguished by their simplicity and by an arrangement that guarantees the escapement from the most serious accidents, even in the event of a fall ... Repairs can be made in any country, and will be easier and less costly than those of common watches ... these watches have a dimension of 25 lines and are less thick than those already considered flat, they have only one hand ... to mislead the public about the works that are ... under my name, I put on the dial a particular mark executed by a machine whose effects are very difficult to imitate ... " signed L Breguet.
