JOIGNEAUX, Pierre - VAN HULLE, Hubert Jean. Vine cultivation and wine production in Belgium, bound with Vine cultivation under glass for the use of amateurs, country house owners, etc.".
Bruxelles et Gand, éd. Librairie Agricole d'Emile Tarlier et J.-S. Van Doosselaere, S.d. (circa 1870, second edition and S.d. (circa 1863), ORIGINAL EDITION, in-12, dark green half calf, green and red marbled paper boards, filets, roulettes, guirlandes, gilded author and titles on 5-rib spine, speckled edges, late 19th century binding, 131 - (1) + 15 - (32 bl.) pp, table of contents for the Joigneaux, 1 fold-out black plate with 3 figures of greenhouse planting in the Van Hulle, bookplate of E. Gilis drawn by Plick. Pierre Joigneaux (1815 - 1892) was a journalist and later a politician of the extreme left. After being expelled from France by Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, he settled in Belgium, where he resumed his agronomic studies. Returning to France after an amnesty in 1859, he resumed his political activities and became the promoter of the Beaune School of Viticulture. Hubert Jean Van Hulle (1827 - 1900) horticulturist and gardener at the Château de Hollaeken in Belgium. In 1857, he became head of the Botanical Garden at Ghent University. He was also a founding member of the Cercle d'Arboriculture de Belgique. Reunion of two rare texts on vines in Belgium, complete with the beautiful fold-out plate. It's worth noting that, despite its climate and soil, Belgium does have a vineyard that produces wine - and good wine at that! The author travels through most of the vine-growing areas in Belgium, mainly in the south of the country (Ref. Pierre de Crombrugghe). These books are here to prove it once again! I haven't been able to find out who the bookplate belonged to, but given its design, it should be a scientist, lover or professional of vines.
Very good condition of binding, paper (no foxing) and board.
