Second edition in French, the first being from 1626, of the first work by German physician Jean Neander, translated by Jacques Veyras. A curious work full of medical recipes using tobacco leaves or other parts. The author sees tobacco as a little panacea, claiming that it soothes hunger and thirst, and can be used as an antidote for hellebore poisoning. It highlights the importance of the Dutch in importing tobacco from America to Europe. Tobacco growing, harvesting, processing and storage are discussed. And how to smoke it with a pipe. Very fine, complete plates. Stamp of the library of Jean Richard (actor and circus enthusiast), a great collector of works on tobacco and especially on the pipe. New binding, handwritten bookplates on one endpaper and on title page, yellowed paper, a few freckles, some leaves skilfully restored (old traces of worms), RARE and SEARCHED. The binding is in very good condition; the paper is "old" with restorations and some scattered soiling; the plates are in good condition.
