DEVAL JACQUES [J. Boullaire]
Marie Galante
Paris, 1954, Cercle Grolier, in-4 sheets in folder and slipcase, 244pp.-2ff. 26 original drypoints by Jacques Boullaire (1 frontispiece, 2 plates off-text and 23 in-text). Unique edition of 200 copies on Rives vellum for members of the Cercle Grolier. Nominative copy for M. A. Weill. Monod I, n°3726. The novel, recounting the adventures of a pretty telegraph operator embroiled in a story of espionage and prostitution around the Panama Canal, first published in 1931, was adapted into a musical and then into a film in 1934 by Henry King. Jacques Boullaire (1893-1976), painter, engraver and photographer, a pupil of Guy Arnoux and Galanis, started out as a wood engraver, before turning to drypoint, allowing his drawings to be more spontaneous. He was appointed official painter to the French Navy in 1959.
