Gilles CHAUVELIN workshop. - Lot 201
Gilles CHAUVELIN workshop.
Head of "La plus belle".
Stone sculpture.
1967.
Diameter 23 cm - Width 3 cm.
Weight : 2,2 kg.
Note: "La plus belle" is a stone sculpture for which Max Ernst first designed plaster models of the body and the two-faced head. Gilles Chauvelin's studio then used these models to create the enlarged stone version. The plaster models were presented in 2009 as part of the exhibition Max Ernst, le Jardin de la France, at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tours.
These plaster casts are now part of a private collection in Huismes and are mentioned in Werner Spies (ed.), Max Ernst OEuvreKatalog, vol. 7, OEuvres 1964-1969, edited by Werner Spies, Sigrid and Günter Metken and Jürgen Pech, Cologne 2007, no. 4594 and 4594,I, p. 379. The work presented here was made in Gilles Chauvelin's studio from plaster by Max Ernst.
The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Dr. Jürgen Pech. This work will be included in the next supplement to the Max Ernst catalog raisonné, currently in preparation.
Provenance: The works from the studio were given by Max Ernst to Gilles Chauvelin and Simone-Issaud, his second wife, then by direct succession.
