Gilles CHAUVELIN's workshop. - Lot 202
Gilles CHAUVELIN's workshop.
La Plus belle.
Stone sculpture.
1967.
164 x 32 x 42 cm.
Note: This is the first version to come out of Gilles Chauvelin's studio, presented to Max Ernst but not chosen by him. This first sketch, based on Max Ernst's plaster model (SMP 4594), is an important testimony to the creative process that linked Max Ernst to Gilles Chauvelin's workshop at "La Couture" in Huismes.
The second stone version, designed with sufficient precision and fitted with a head, served as the starting point for the bronze edition. This version is now in a private collection in New York. This version is mentioned in Werner Spies (ed.), Max Ernst OEuvreKatalog, vol. 7, Werke 1964-1969, bearbeitet von Werner Spies, Sigrid und Günter Metken und Jürgen Pech, Cologne 2007, no. 4594, II, p. 380.
Provenance: The works from the studio were given by Max Ernst to Gilles Chauvelin and Simone-Issaud, his second wife, then by direct succession.
