Gilles CHAUVELIN's workshop. - Lot 203
Gilles CHAUVELIN's workshop. The Museum of Man. Stone sculpture. 1965. 45 x 30 x 23.5 cm. Note: This is the first version to come out of Gilles Chauvelin's studio, presented to Max Ernst but not chosen by him. Another final version later served as the basis for the bronze edition. Since 2005, this last version has been part of the collection of the Max Ernst Museum in Brühl, donated by Dorothea Tanning, the artist's first wife. It is mentioned in Werner Spies (ed.), Max Ernst OEuvre-Katalog, vol. 7, Werke 1964-1969, bearbeitet von Werner Spies, Sigrid und Günter Metken und Jürgen Pech, Cologne 2007, no. 4585, p. 369. This work is a fine example of the collaboration between Max Ernst and the workshop of Gilles Chauvelin, who was mayor of Huismes at the time and ran a stone-cutting business at "La Couture" in Huismes. The friendship between the two men is illustrated by their artistic collaboration, which lasted several years during Max Ernst's residence in Huismes, in his home-workshop at Le Pin. Provenance: The works from the studio were given by Max Ernst to Gilles Chauvelin and Simone-Issaud, his second wife, then by direct succession. Bibliography: - W. Spies, S. Join-Lambert, J.
