INUIT, Alaska. - Lot 61
INUIT, Alaska.
Characteristic of Inuit art based on the simplification of forms, this human effigy in marine ivory represents a standing figure, with arms at his sides and legs slightly apart. Shamanism conferred spiritual value on such objects, making them amulets that could be carried around.
19th century.
H. 7.5 cm.
Note: "The Inuit believe that every living being possesses a soul, and that this soul is a tiny replica of the being it inhabits" (Furst and Furst 1982, 141).
Provenance: Henri COUILLARD (1904-1984) collection, Vincennes. Then by descent. Corresponds to number 21 of the estate donation made on 21/12/79.
