MAORI, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Polynesia. - Lot 62
MAORI, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Polynesia.
Hardwood, reddish-brown patina.
Short "Patu Wahaika" club favored by the Maori in close combat, but also used as a ceremonial weapon by the "Rangatira" (hereditary chiefs), during speeches, to accentuate the presentation of certain points.
This example stands out for the harmony of its volumes, the regularity and depth of its material and the great finesse of its carving of the "Tiki" figure and the head carved on the "reke", the pommel of the club.
19th century.
40.5 x 14.5 cm.
Literature: Evans, Maori Weapons in Pre-European New Zealand, Auckland, 2002, p. 38.
Provenance: Henri COUILLARD collection (1904-1984), Vincennes. Then by descent. Corresponds to number 53 of the estate donation made on 21/12/79.
