RA'IVAVAE ISLAND, Austral Islands Archipelago, Polynesia. - Lot 63
RA'IVAVAE ISLAND, Austral Islands Archipelago, Polynesia. Wood, reddish-brown patina. Beautiful ceremonial paddle entirely and delicately engraved with tiny lattice motifs. The pommel is carved with cascading motifs and crowned with ten triangular heads of "tiki-tiki tangata" (male gods). The function of paddles from the Austral Islands remains uncertain. They may have been displayed on ceremonial occasions, such as dances, parades, ancestral rituals or inaugurations. Our example stands out for its harmonious proportions and delicately executed details, making it a true masterpiece. 19th century. 80 x19.5 cm. Provenance: Henri COUILLARD collection (1904-1984), Vincennes. Then by descent. Corresponds to number 52 of the estate donation made on 21/12/79.
