BEKOM, Kingdom of KOM, Cameroon. - Lot 112
BEKOM, Kingdom of KOM, Cameroon. Hard, dense wood, reddish-brown patina, glossy highlights. Ngon" palm mask representing a princess of royal blood. This mask, worn over the head by the dancer, is the very archetype of the style: protruding cheeks symbolizing abundance, wealth and fecundity, visible whitened teeth, protruding ears, bulging eyes emerging from hollow sockets and the rare, masterly hairstyle reserved for women of royal blood. First third of 20th century. H. 48 cm. (slight wear).
