LETTRE MANUSCRITE AUTOGRAPHE À LA PLUME DU DUC D'AUMALE, dated Woodnorton Everham (August 28, 1887). 4 1/2 pages in-8°. According to a handwritten indication in pencil, this note was addressed by the Duc d'Aumale, then in exile, to Camille Rousset (1821-1892), author of a history of the Conquest of Algeria. This note is a detailed account of the capture of La Smala, giving important details of the role the young prince had played in this glorious affair, and in particular setting the record straight on the phrase he is said to have uttered before the battle: "On ne recule pas dans ma race" ("There is no retreat in my race"). f) AUTOGRAPHIC NOTE FROM THE DUC D'AUMALE to Camille Rousset. Relating to Edouard Detaille's drawing of him charging at Taguin (rectification of facts). This drawing, as indicated in an autograph note by Camille Rousset, had been purchased by him and sent to the Duc d'Aumale in London in 1887. It is in the collection of the Musée Condé in Chantilly and was reproduced in Detaille's Armée Française.
