JAMES Robert - Lot 200
JAMES Robert Dictionnaire universel de médecine, de chirurgie, de chymie, de botanique, d'anatomie, de pharmacie, d'histoire naturelle, &c. [...]. [...]. Paris, Briasson, David l'aîné, Durand, 1746-48]. 6 volumes in 6 volumes in-folio, contemporary half vellum with corners. Worn binding with accidents and small tears, some very slight dampening or foxing to paper. E.O. of the translation by Diderot (who had the idea of producing the Encyclopédie as a result of this collaboration). "The largest, most exhaustive and scholarly medical dictionary written in English before the beginning of the 19th century". James (1703-1776), a physician, was assisted in the writing of his dictionary by the famous poet Samuel Johnson (1709-1784). Compared with the original English edition (1743-1745), this copy is revised and enlarged by 3 volumes by the French physician Julien Busson (1717-1781), and illustrated with numerous H.T. fold-out plates featuring surgical instruments, human organs, operations, etc.
