Vu Cao Dam (1908-2000) is one of the major figures of modern Vietnamese art, recognized as both a painter and sculptor. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine in Hanoi, he moved to France in 1931, where he developed a body of work marked by the meeting of Asian traditions and Western modernity, imbued with poetry, gentleness and profound sensitivity. His silk paintings have made a major contribution to his reputation, while his terracotta sculptures play an essential role in his career, particularly in his early years. Delicately crafted, they are characterized by gentle forms and simplified volumes. The artist favors stylized human figures - often feminine, maternal or childlike - expressing a quest for harmony and serenity. The work presented here is a perfect illustration of this quest. The face, with its delicately modeled features and fine eyes, exudes calm and interiority. The head, slightly tilted, accentuates this impression of contemplation. The surface of the terracotta, deliberately irregular and patinated, preserves the trace of the artist's gesture and reinforces the sensitive dimension of the work. Vu cao Dam's simplification of form and absence of superfluous detail suggest the essence of the subject with great accuracy. This work testifies to his personal language, at the crossroads of Asian traditions and a refined modernity, oriented towards harmony and serenity. Expert : Cabinet DELALANDE - Qinghua YIN
