Japan, late Edo period (1603 - 1868). - Lot 262
Japan, late Edo period (1603 - 1868). Traditional "Han-nya" mask or female demon from traditional and legendary Japanese floklore. Made of carved "ichii" wood (a tree in the Japanese yew family), with a fierce expression and deep wrinkles, for wall decoration. 24 x 15 x 15 cm. (Age patina, accidents and missing parts, the jaw is damaged and missing, the horns are missing. Fairly good condition). Note: "Han-nya" represents a female demon in the form of a face distorted by jealousy and anger, symbolizing above all human suffering, particularly that of women faced with betrayal in love. It first appeared in 14th-century Noh theater, one of Japan's most refined traditional dramatic arts.
