Papal States, second half of the 19th century. - Lot 269
Papal States, second half of the 19th century. Rare sword of a papal chamberlain, Imbert de la Phalecque family. Steel hilt, flat fluted pommel, crossguard with straight quillons ending in tassels, tang with black horn plates inlaid with finely chiseled steel motifs depicting plant and floral designs. Scarlet wool cord present. Fine straight blade with a light gray patina, mottled in places, featuring a diamond-shaped cross-section with a double edge and a small central groove; no maker’s mark. Black leather scabbard with two steel fittings featuring scalloped borders and line-decorated edges; the tip ends in a motif identical to the pommel—flat and fluted—and the chape features a long button. Sword in its original condition as discovered; never previously part of a collection. 91.5 cm (blade 72.5 cm). (Signs of wear and minor usage marks; the blade is slightly curved; in good condition). Note: For illustrative purposes only, we have included a photo found online depicting a papal chamberlain in ceremonial uniform carrying the same sword.
