France, Second Empire (1852–1870). A sword known as a “magistrate’s sword.” Mountings in gilded cast brass and burnished steel. Clover-shaped pommel stamped with the imperial eagle, surmounted by a melon-ribbed rivet knob. The tang is alternately adorned with gilded blades and plain burnished steel blades (marcasite). Guard decorated with floral motifs. Hilt featuring a cut-out gilded eagle surrounded by plain, burnished steel curvilinear bands (marcasite). The beaded chain connecting the pommel to the left guard is missing. Three-edged blade, with a light gray patina stained in places, gilded and blued one-third of the way up (remnants), and chiseled with trophies of arms and floral motifs, bearing the maker’s mark inscribed in gilded cartouches, now illegible. Blackened leather scabbard with two gilded and cut brass fittings, engraved with floral motifs; the scabbard cap features a long button decorated in the same style. 89 cm (Blade 72.5 cm). (Signs of wear and normal use; the guard chain is missing; the gilding and bluing on the blade are heavily worn; uncommon. Fairly good condition).
