GILCHRIST on September 28, 1909 Marked “THE YANKEE PATENT PENDING USA.” Cork-pressing machine made of black-painted cast iron, mounted on a wooden base. Accommodates 4 sizes of stoppers. Model featured in the book by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*. Cork presses—pharmacy or laboratory models. These objects were used to compress corks that had been previously scalded in order to reduce their size and facilitate their insertion into bottles. They were particularly indispensable in pharmacies and were designed to impress, both by their weight and by their mechanism or decoration. With a few exceptions, the items up for auction are featured and documented in the masterful work by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*, an internationally recognized reference.
