Figurative CROCODILE cork press in an attacking stance - Lot 505
Figurative CROCODILE cork press in an attacking stance Zoomorphic depiction of a crocodile with its head raised. Cast-iron cork press with a dark patina, designed to be pressed down or secured to a table. Accommodates 4 sizes of corks. France. Late 19th century. Model featured in the book *Wine Antiques & Collectibles* by BULL & PARADI. Cork presses—pharmacy or laboratory models. These objects were used to compress corks that had been previously scalded in order to reduce their size and facilitate their insertion into bottles. They were particularly indispensable in pharmacy dispensaries and were intended to impress, both by their weight and by their mechanism or decoration. With a few exceptions, the items up for auction are illustrated and documented in the masterful work by BULL & PARADI, *Wine Antiques & Collectibles*, an internationally recognized reference.
