Southern German school, late 15th–early 16th century, in the - Lot 152
Southern German school, late 15th–early 16th century, in the tradition of the Nuremberg workshops. St. James the Greater and St. Margaret of Antioch. Painted and cut vellum decorated with foliage and flowers, likely used as a stencil or model in the art of glass painting. 21 x 17 cm. (Signs of wear, small losses, and fading of polychromy; warping and traces of use related to its presumed function as a template). Note: An interesting illustrated sheet depicting Saint James the Greater and Saint Margaret of Antioch, the latter recognizable by the cross and the dragon she subdues. The composition is set within a rich damascene-style floral border. The surface features numerous cutouts affecting both the figurative elements and the ornamental decoration and inscription, likely indicating that it served as a model, template, or stencil intended for transferring all or part of the composition. The typology of the figures, the treatment of the decoration, and the background motifs can be linked to southern Germanic production of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, particularly within the Nuremberg tradition of glass painting. The hypothesis of a connection to a glass-painting workshop is thus particularly interesting, although it cannot be confirmed based on current knowledge.
