Auguste Marie BARREAU (?–1922). - Lot 170
Auguste Marie BARREAU (?–1922). Dido, or Hope Dashed. Patinated bronze sculpture, signed on the base and bearing the inscriptions “Gold Medal, 1866 Fine Arts Exhibition” and “Purchased by the State” on the edges. 59 x 18 x 15 cm. Note: Dido was the founding queen of the city of Carthage. The moment captured by the sculptor is one of despair and romantic disappointment (hence the alternative title *Disappointed Hope*). Indeed, she was abandoned by the Trojan hero Aeneas on Jupiter’s orders, even though she was madly in love with him.
