[GIRAUDOUX Jean L'Apollon de Marsac. Play in 1 act [Typescri - Lot 50
[GIRAUDOUX Jean L'Apollon de Marsac. Play in 1 act [Typescript], S. l. n. d. [between 1942 and 1947]. In-4° leaves bound with two Parisian ties. Missing one Parisian fastener. Cover and last leaf detached. Minor tears to edges of some leaves. As is. One handwritten correction p. 42 (scene eight): "d'avouer". L'Apollon de Marsac is a comedy in 1 act, text by Jean Giraudoux, staging by Louis Jouvet, sets by Eduardo Anahory, performed at the Teatro municipal de Rio de Janeiro, June 16, 1942. While Giraudoux was in France, he continued to correspond with Louis Jouvet, who had gone into exile with his troupe. He wrote this play between July 1941 and January 1942, initially entitled L'Apollon de Marsac. Received in typescript by Jouvet on February 25, 1942, it was performed in June 1942 at the Théâtre Municipal de Rio de Janeiro. The play was revived by the Compagnie Louis Jouvet in Paris on April 19, 1947 at the Théâtre de l'Athénée under the title L'Apollon de Bellac. The text of the present typescript is very different from the text of the first 1941-42 manuscript of L'Apollon de Marsac, and very close to the definitive 1947 version entitled L'Apollon de Bellac, although it retains the original title of L'Apollon de Marsac on its cover and first page. In addition, the character of Monsieur de Bellac is named by the actor who plays him: "Jouvet". There are a few other minor differences with the final version: for example, at the start of Scene II, Agnès says in the present typescript "Merci, Monsieur?", whereas the 1947 printed text reads "Je vous remercie Monsieur". There are also typos in this typescript, corrected in the 1947 printing: for example, "gourmande, donc, voluptueuse" corrected to "gourmande, douce, voluptueuse" in the printed text. Similarly, in scene VIII, the typescript reads "Votre faute! votre cuisse!" instead of "Votre faute! votre crime!" in the final version. Another, more important difference in scene VIII: the typescript text reads in Jouvet's mouth "Le seul narcissisme est de trouver les autres laids" ("The only narcissism is to find others ugly"), whereas the definitive version reads "Le seul narcissisme coupable est celui qui trouve les autres laids." ("The only guilty narcissism is that which finds others ugly."). We would therefore be in the presence of a kind of pre-original of L'Apollon de Bellac, probably typed for the actors' work preparing the revival of the play at the Théâtre de l'Athénée in 1947. Very rare.
