VADÉ - OEuvres poissardes, suivies de celles de De l'Écluse, - Lot 339
VADÉ - OEuvres poissardes, suivies de celles de De l'Écluse, edition of 300 copies, including 100 on large paper; decorated with figures printed in color. Paris, Defer et Maisonneuve, de l'imprimerie Didot le Jeune, 1796. Large quarto, full red morocco in slipcase-167 pp and 4 figures finely printed in color. This work has become, through successive sales, one of the most famous illustrated books of the XVIIIᵉ century. One of its illustrations was used in the dust jacket of the famous catalog Les Fastes de Comus... [Oberlé 382]. Monsiau's illustrations are produced using a delicate engraving technique known as "à la poupée", with which all the colors are printed in a single pass through the press. As for the poissardes works, Vadé inaugurated a particular literary style, the poissard style, born of the crossroads between the literature of the time and the Parisian and popular speech of his time. The author, a victim of the excesses of good food, died in 1757 at the age of 37.
