TARDIEU JEAN [Petr Herel] - Lot 368
TARDIEU JEAN [Petr Herel] Séquelles Paris, Nicaise Bookshop, 2009. In-4º, 305 × 240 mm, bound in a single booklet by a metal hinge, covers by Flexor. 10 intaglio engravings by Petr Herel inspired Jean Tardieu's Lettre à un graveur visionnaire. Preface by Frédérique Martin-Scherer. We were keen to put into practice our vision of the contemporary artist's book, with strong formal & conceptual biases in the service of a book whose extraordinary history spans 30 years! In 1978, reading Borges, Petr Herel created ten etchings, ten etchings filled with chimerical, fantastical characters. Jean Tardieu happened to see them in a workshop, and drew inspiration from them for a text which, unfortunately, he was never able to get the engraver to read. Yet, relayed by numerous printers and publishers, these cascading works encountered too many obstacles to hatch together... 30 years later, worked by time itself, the engravings and their text meet enfin under the aegis of the Nicaise bookshop. On November 18, 2009, Séquelles was awarded the Grand Prix de Bibliophilie "Jean Lurçat" by the Académie des Beaux-Arts. We are delighted with the success of Séquelles, and thank you for your confidence, your interest and your compliments. The text is hand-composed in Gill Sans movable lead. Printed on Johannot wove paper and Japon Kinugawa, 45 copies were printed. Zone Opaque designed and printed it for Pierre Walusinski and the Nicaise bookshop. [We reproduce here the Nicaise bookshop sheet].
