KOTA OBAMBA, Gabon, late 19th–early 20th century. - Lot 103
KOTA OBAMBA, Gabon, late 19th–early 20th century. Wood, brass, copper. A symbolic evocation of an ancestor she honors, this “Mbulu Ngulu” reliquary guardian figure consists of a wooden core traditionally covered with thin sheets of brass and copper. The power of this work lies in the radical abstraction of the human figure embodied by this Mbulu Ngulu and the age-old oxidation of the metal sheets, resulting from ritual libations and offerings received to strengthen the bond with the ancestors and earn their favor. Late 19th–early 20th century. 57.5 x 33 cm. (minor losses, previous restorations, abrasions). Expert: Christian NJIENSI
